Vancouver singer/songwriter, label founder—Lost Records, which she created to support poignant underground music—and ExploreMusic favourite Billy Pettinger aka Billy The Kid has released 3.5 albums with her punk band, Billy and the Lost Boys, and a five-song EP (“The Lost Cause”) that was produced by Our Lady Peace’s Raine Maida.

She’s now ready with a brand new full length album, “Ours,” and we’re excited to bring it to you.

If you’re into Radiohead, you know that htye love to do covers. They’ve tackled material by Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Joy Division, Blondie, Portishead and even Bjork.

I found a cache of all kinds of Radiohead covers, each available for download. Grab them all while you can.

Personally, I like their take on “Wonderwall”–but there’s lots more to choose from.

Although they have a wretchedly awful name, San Diego’s Cuckoo Chaos has a good sound for the summer. If I were to sketch it out as a Venn diagram, we’d be concentrating on the intersection of circles labeled “Dave Matthews Band,” “Talking Heads” and, er, “Pablo Cruise.” If these guys aren’t careful, they’ll end up with a job on a cruise ship.

“Jesus Flag American Fish” is from a 7-inch single that’s also available for a free download.

The all-brunette Born Blonde is from London and sound like they have studied every single British indie guitar rock band that ever came out between 1988 and 1998. They can do everything from shoegaze to Madchester. If the Verve were still together, they’d be a natural to open for them on tour.

The Coolest Song in the World for Wednesday, June 29, 2011: CREEM and “I Hate You”

CREEM (just like the old Detroit-based music magazine, boy howdy!) specializes in a sloppy form of hardcore that’s practiced in basements and garages. ”I Hate You” is the b-side of a 7-inch release called “Good Riddance.”

Beyond that, though, I’ve hit a wall. Can anyone else contribute to their story? Damn cool song, too.

If you’ve ever driven through central Florida, you’re probably not surprised that there’s a band called Orange Avenue. This is a five-piece from Daytona Beach who have followed up a 2007 debut (called The Orange Album,naturally) with a new record entitled Reset.

The track they’d like you to hear is called “Just Refrain.”

Occasionally, I run across a song that makes me wonder “What year is this?” Cymbals‘ “Summer Escaping” is a prime example. With its blend of Depeche Mode-isms and Duran Duran-iness, it’s 80s retro in disguise.

Blackbird, an alternative hip-hop artist from Los Angeles, is offering up a track called “Jus Someone” [sic] as a free download. I think it’s the coolest thing I’ve heard today.

The Daily Download for Monday, June 27, 2011: Gus Gus and “Over”

Only 320,000 people live in Iceland, most of whom have seen their purchasing power plummet thanks to the silly and reckless financial ways of their government and bands. But that hasn’t stopped the country from cranking out some pretty amazing music.

I’ve been a fan of Gus Gus (pronounced Goose Goose) for a long time. This is a typically ridiculously large group (I think there are nine of them) who have been together since 1995. If you want a description, I’d say they’re a lot like Sigur Ros, but with a dance beat. And they sing in a proper language.

Gus Gus now records for a German techno label and their second release for them (and seventh overall) is entitled Arabian Horse. From this record comes a free download of a track called “Over.”
