Lou Hickey is a co-founder of Codeine Velvet Club, the group that formed out of the ashes of the Fratelli’s, that great indie band from Scotland.

She’s going down a road lined with malt shops, 57 Chevys and hula-hoops.  Her brand of vintage retro-pop sounds like it should be coming from an old AM radio, circa the late 1950s.  No wonder she’s opened shows for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

There’s a four-track EP entitled Minutes, Hours, Days coming soon, which will be followed by a full and yet-unnamed album in the fall.

Out front is Dusty Exner, daughter of a couple of biker parents from Winnipeg who was born on the same day Chernobyl melted down.  She’s married to Mykal Exner, the band’s bass player.  Guitarist Marlene Loud is a classically trained pianist who prefers Fugazi.  Pynner, the drummer, is an accomplished ventriloquist.  And they have a touring guitarist named Dave Fuckin’ Roberts.

Sort of writes itself, don’t it?

Iceage–a group from Copenhagen so young that none of them can legally rent a car or even buy a beer in some places–has been breathlessly described as “a bunch of teenage bullies full of anger and anxiety.”

There may be something to this since they refer to their fans as “victims.”  Apparently, things can get, er, bloody.

Their debut album is entitled New Brigade.  Try “Broken Bone” on for size.

Here’s my final “Coolest Song in the World” pick for the week.  (To the uninitiated, I anoint one song as the one that’s rocking my world at the moment.  I may be fleeting or I may stick this thing on my iPod and leave it there for months.)

Furyon is a five-piece leather-lcad heavily-studded band from Bristol, England–and they look like they’d hurt me if I said anything bad about them.

Renegade Ride came together in Helsinki about six years ago and released a debut record entitled Dream Machine in 2009.  They’re into the same sort of riffage as the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age.  If that sounds appealing, try the new single called “Big Bad Wolf.”
