Street musicians are often one of a city’s most under-appreciated resources. These people play sidewalks, parks, subway stations and bus stops not for money but for the sheer joy of performing. Some—a tiny few, but some—go on to become well-known professional musicians. Joe Strummer
is a great example.
But for most, being a busker is a tough gig; recognition comes slowly, if at all. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the first International Metro Musicians Festival this fall.
Buskers from Montreal, New York, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Moscow, New York, Barcelona and Mexico City will gather in Sao Paulo, Brazil to showcase their stuff. Their stage? Se Station, the busiest subway station in Brazil. Who knows who/what might be discovered?
