Alan Cross – My Picks for the Best Songs of 2010 (So Far)

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

As part of this gig, I get to hear thousands of new songs ever year.  Let’s flip through the iPhone to see what’s stuck with me:

Yellowbrite Smile/Yoav
This dude is seriously good.  If you haven’t discovered what he can do, check out the special performance he did for ExploreMusic then run out to buy his album, A Foolproof Escape Plan.  Get the official music video for the song here

This Momentary/Delphic
People describe Delphic as some kind of alternative dance band.  I prefer to think of them as a group that makes some of the coolest spa music since the dawn of the Buddha Bar CD.  Check out the video here.

Drowning/How to Destroy Angels
Mr. and Mrs. Trent Reznor have given us several hints about what this post-NIN project might be able to accomplish, including this advance single.  I’m most intrigued.

Felicia/The Constellations
Yeah, it’s pretty base in its subject matter.  You got a problem with that?

Let’s Get Lost/Beck and Bat for Lashes
Let’s be clear: if I’m going to watch anything with vampires, it’ll be True Blood.  I do, however, appreciate the time and effort that goes into the creation of every Twilight soundtrack.  This particular track from Eclipse is especially haunting.

Drunk Girls/LCD Soundsystem
When I first heard it, I thought “James Murphy, you’ve lost your mind.”  When I realized I was still humming the song twenty minutes later, I though “James Murphy, you’re a genius.”  Here’s the goofy video.

This Too Shall Pass/OK Go
Was it the Rube Goldberg machine video?  Or the single tracking shot featuring the marching band?  Or the time they came into play it for us?  I don’t care.  Love it.

Blood Buzz Ohio/The National
After five albums, these guys are finally getting the kind of attention they deserve.  Watch them do it live here.

Candy Candy/Guilty About Girls
Remember the Vancouver band Pure?  They’ve been partially reconstituted in this new band who have one of the catchiest singles I’ve heard in a very long time.  Can’t wait for the album.

Tell ‘Em/Sleigh Bells
Noisy, fuzzy and buzzy—just the way I like it.  Sample it here

hey alan……nothing to do with top songs, but i am a big fan. so many sunday nights were spent listening to your show as i drove home from gimli, mb. always an interesting topic, whether i liked the band you were featuring or not. somehow the story behind the story always made the show worth listening to. I guess it dates back to when you were here in the peg, and i am glad we can still catch the rock report. so thanks for many years of entertainment and some insightful and,…….”i did’nt know that” history of rock!! All the best……….dug g
