Rock Concert Tragedies

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

The crush that killed at least 19 people at Germany’s Love Parade festival on July 24 is part of a long list of musical tragedies involving stampedes, overcrowding and panic.

1979: Eleven fans were trampled to death as 10,000 people charged into the general admission area of a Who show in Cincinnati.

1991: Three teenagers died when 5,000 AC/DC fans surged forward at a show in Salt Lake City.

1996: A teenaged girl is caught in a crush in a Smashing Pumpkins show in Ireland.

2000: Four teenaged girls were killed in an Indonesian shopping centre crush when they tried to get closed to A1, a British boy band.

2000: Nine people were crushed to death against barricades and 43 more were injured during Pearl Jam’s set at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark.

2002: An Australian nurse was killed at a Brighton Beach party in the UK where the featured DJ was Fatboy Slim.

At the risk of being pedantic, the Roskilde tragedy happened in 2000, not in 2001.
