First Impression of Another New U2 Song

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

It’s only when you travel to other countries to see U2 perform do you begin to grasp the band’s global appeal. Every country and territory has their own rabid community of fans, anxious to post the information, rumours, photos and video.  The thing that has the hardcore excited these days is the prospect of new music from the band sooner rather than later.

Let’s face it: No Line on the Horizon, although a decent album, has been a disappointment.  No massive, timeless singles.  No big crowd favourites.  No sales (well, comparatively.)  U2 (and their label) needs something new, fresh, vital and, above all, properly U2.

That’s why the faithful are so excited about the four new songs that have been performed on this stage of the 360 Tour.  The latest seems to be called “Every Breaking Waves.”

It’s pretty enough, but given that it was just Bono and the Edge, it¹s far from finished. It’ll be interesting to see how this will flesh out in a studio.

As a faithful fan I was also pretty excited to see an accoustic version of No Line On The Horizon performed in Helsinki too.

That got crickets and tumbleweeds from the crowd, but a million miles away in Canada I was following the set list on twitter and if I had been there I would have been singing that one back, it is incredible live and I was sad to see it cut when they opened in Turin.

NLOTH may have, as you say, been an album that most forgot, but the title track *could* (should) have been a single, and “Crazy” is a huge crowd favourite so far–which was a huge surprise to me when I saw them in Vegas. What did you think of “Crazy” in Moscow? I love the new Discoteque snippet too.

My first impression of the new songs was sheer joy. The instrumental “Return of the Stingray Guitar” to open is pumping and I love it, what did you think of it as an opener? Or did you like Soon from last year?

I love the new slow ones, North Star and when I first heard Every Breaking Wave I have to admit it stopped me in my tracks, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. The new Glastonbury one is growing on me. I still crave to hear a recorded version…don’t you?

As a music fan does it seem like, overall, bands are touring more before the next Album drops? I saw Oasis before they put out their last one, I saw Fran Healy just last week and his new one doesn’t drop until October!
