Indie Track

Microbunny: “49 Swans”

2 years ago by Adam Morrison |

This is the Indie Track of the Day Giveaway. It’s just like it sounds—every day we spotlight a song from an indie band/artist and we let you keep the track to do with whatever you like (within the limits of the law).

The song is part of our podcast, so if you want it (you do), search on iTunes for the ExploreMusic.com podcast, or just scroll down to the bottom of this page and click the links.

After founding King Cobb Steelie and spending seven years as a member of the band, Al Okada formed a writing and performing collaboration with Tamara Williamson and recorded Microbunny’s self-titled CD in 2001. The follow-up, Dead Stars, came out in 2004 and featured additional live musicians including King Kong Girio and Cino Evil.

Microbunny won the top prize in the CBC 2002 Big Break Contest and their songs have been placed in films and TV shows including "The Shield."

Much of 49 Swans, Microbunny’s latest album, was composed as it was recorded. The effort is a departure from the robotics of the electronica genre, and Okada only used analog instruments and source samples that predate the "digital age."

The album represents a new writing collaboration between Okada, who plays virtually all of the instruments, and Rebecca Campbell (Jane Siberry, Fat Man Waving, Porkbelly Futures). The band also includes long-time drummer Cino Evil (King Cobb Steelie, Kinnie Starr) and new members Mike Taylor (Loomer) on Wurlitzer electric piano and samples and Pete Kirkpatrick (Tristan Psionic, Heimlich Maneuver) on upright bass and electric bass.
