Last summer, director Bruce McDonald shot a quickie movie around a Broken Social Scene show in Toronto.  The bulk of the shot took one day and was done on a budget of something roughly approximating James Cameron’s personal catering bill for one day on Avatar.  This past week—some nine months later—This Movie is Broken received its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival down in Austin. 

The movie follows Bruno’s attempts to secure backstage passes for Caroline, who is leaving to attend school in France the next day.  Her favourite band is Broken Social Scene, so he pulls out all the stops.

Early reviews are quite good.  Check out this rave in the Globe and Mail.  No word on when This Movie is Broken might get a full release, but since I know the producer, I’ll see if I can find out.

(Full disclosure:  I was offered a part in the movie but because it was shot on a Saturday when I already had something planned, I said “Meh.”  I’m an idiot.)
