Is U2’s Spider-Man Musical Actually Going to Open? Maybe.

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

Getting Spider-Man to Broadway has been more difficult than fitting Doc Octopus for a dinner jacket, but this whole thing might finally get off the ground by the end of the year. After innumerable delays, enduring more cashflow problems than Courtney Love and more cast issues
than a lifetime of Jersey Shore,
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is finally set to start rehearsals on Monday.

So far, $50 million has been sunk into this extravaganza/turkey (take your pick), much of it from U2’s coffers, apparently. With Bono and the Edge writing all the music, they have more than a passing interest in the success of this production.

With previews starting November 14 and the grand opening December 21 (conveniently scheduled after the current leg of the 360 Tour), the producers are confident enough that they can pull it off that
ticket pre-sales have begun—including through U2.com.

But
December is a long way off. There’s still plenty of time for things to go wrong.
