Coldplagiarism Or What

First it was Joe Satriani, now Cat Stevens (Islam, that is) claims that "Viva La Vida" borrows from his song "Foreigner Suite."

So we’re not a hundred percent sure where we sit on this.

We definitely think the Satriani vs. Coldplay thing is undeniable. The Cat Stevens vs. Coldplay thing definitely has some merit, and if it does, then we suspect  a Cat Stevens vs. Joe Satriani discussion needs to take place.

What we’re also sure of is that the dude Gunther in our final link is awesome!!

Luckily for Coldplay, Islam is not suing the band. Not yet, that is.

Remember the Flaming Lips Vs. Cat Stevens debate? Back in 2003, Islam claimed that substantial original portions of his 1970 hit "Father and Son" were recycled in the Lip’s song "Fight Test."

So maybe Coldplay is next  – or could it be Satriani?

    yeah…I guess it’s kinda the same, but on the other hand it’s not like there aren’t a BILLION rock songs built on the same blues progression for gods sake. I doubt ol’ Cat invented this particular one…

    I also think there is no plagiarism anywhere. I mean, regarding the two older tracks. Ok there’s really a solid dispute on the Satriani x Codplay case but anyway I’m a true believer on inconscient reproduction here. It happened – if we look back decades ago – on the My Sweet Lord x He’s So Fine and Come Together x You Can’t Catch Me trials. George Harrison lost the case, so Lennon’s. But then again there was a bit of set up in both instances (mainly on Lennon’s, as Berry’s manager was addamant on taking it to court).

    To wrap this up, I guess Coldplay lads should not lose their sleep on this late “scandal” as it’s a song that dates back 1973…If Cat Stevens feels it right suing someone that’s gotta be Satriani who “copy him” in first instance.
