Elektra Records was founded by Jac Holzmanback in the early 1950s. Over the decades, it grew into a great, eclectic label that took chances on everyone from folk (Tim Buckley, Tracy Chapman) to metal (Metallica, Motley Crue) and everything in between (Iggy and the Stooges, Carly
Simon, Tom Waits, Television).
Eventually, Elektra was bought by Warner Brothers and became the “E” in “WEA” (Warner Elektra Atlantic).
In celebration of Elektra’s 60th anniversary, they’ve just launched
a pretty cool website that details the history of the label and its artists. If you have some time, I highly recommend spending some time with it.
