Beatles - Abbey Road

The Top-Selling Vinyl Records of 2010

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

More numbers continue to dribble in from 2010 including stats about how well vinyl sold.

For the second year in a row, the Beatles’ Abbey Road topped the charts followed by The Suburbs by the Arcade Fire(no real surprise given the analogue-friendly nature of the band, their fanbase and the way this album was promoted on vinyl) and The Black Keys’ Brothers (mildly suprising–at least to me.)

I’m not entirely sure what we can extrapolate from this data regarding vinyl junkies or resurrected listening habits/preferences.  One thing is for sure, though:  the passions ignited by these albums have people more than willing to put up with the inconvenience of vinyl in order to experience this music in a very specific way.

Here’s the full top ten:

1. The Beatles – Abbey Road
2. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
3. Black Keys – Brothers
4. Vampire Weekend – Contra
5. Michael Jackson – Thriller
6. National – High Violet
7. Beach House – Teen Dream
8. Jimi Hendrix Experience – Valleys of Neptune
9. Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon
10. The XX – XX

  • And yet, Abbey Road is the only Beatles album currently available on vinyl. It makes no sense. EMI and Apple Records sure are good at doing exactly the opposite of what would make them money.

As for other EMI artists, Dark Side of the Moon is also the only Pink Floyd album on vinyl and I believe there are only 1 or 2 David Bowie albums on vinyl. Personally if all three of those artists collections were available on vinyl I would probably be paying EMI hundreds of dollars.

I picked up Dark Side of the Moon in 2010 on the big disc. Abby Road a the #1 surprises me musically, but aesthetically it doesn’t. It’s never struck me as their finest achievement but certainly is a cool show piece.
