Vote Now! The 5th Annual SOCAN Echo Songwriting Prize

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

‘Tis the season of the songwriting prizes.  The Polar Music Prize was handed out in Sweden on Monday.  Come Tuesday, Britain will have a new Mercury Prize winner.  And on the 20th, it’s Canada’s Polaris Music Prize.

Let me introduce one more to the mix.  SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) sponsors an annual songwriting award for independent musicians.  Dozens and dozens of suggestions (I made a bunch) are whittled down to a list of five finalists.  They are:

1.   “Albatross” written by Olga Goreas, Kevin Laing, Jace Lasek and Richard White, performed by The Besnard Lakes

2.   “Celestica” written by Claudio Palmieri and Margaret Osborn, performed by Crystal Castles

3.   “Destroyer” written by Catherine McCandless and Stephen Ramsay, performed by Young Galaxy

4.   “Hearts Trompet” written by Edo Van Breeman, Bryan Davies, Richard Saul and John Walsh, performed by Brasstronaut

5.   “Odessa” written by Dan Snaith, performed by Caribou

Now it’s your turn.  The public is invited to vote for their favourite by logging onto www.echoprize.ca.  The winning songwriter will get $5,000 in cash.  And to sweeten the pot, one voter (maybe you?) will win an Epiphone Ultra II Les Paul electric guitar.

You have from today until September 30th.  Fill yer boots.
