Yes, summer’s over. Labour Day is here. School starts Tuesday. And then we immerse ourselves into the busiest and craziest months of the year. With that in mind, let’s turn our thoughts to next June when the 17th annual North By Northeast Conference will hit Toronto. Here’s the press release.
TORONTO, CANADA, September 1, 2010 – Coming off the biggest year ever, NXNE (NORTH BY NORTHEAST) invites musicians and filmmakers to apply at www.nxne.com for a chance to jump on board for the 17th edition of one of the world’s premier festivals for new music and music-related films. Submissions for next June’s festival will be accepted – online only – at www.nxne.com until January 31, 2011.
NXNE 2010 expanded to 7 days, hitting new levels in attendance and international media coverage. The festival’s impact was larger than ever – including a complete closure of Yonge Street for the biggest free show ever seen in Toronto, featuring Iggy and The Stooges. 2010 also saw NXNE launch a groundbreaking Interactive festival component. Now, in its 17th year, the festival is more important than ever for all artists looking to instantly reach thousands of new fans, meet key industry people and take their careers to the next level.
Thousands of emerging and established musicians have played NXNE en route to US festival gigs, UK tours, record deals and more. Feist performed at NXNE 2005 pre-”1234″; hip hop stars k-os and K’Naan both hit NXNE on the way to platinum albums and worldwide fame; and electro-rocker Peaches rocked NXNE in 2006. Artists to watch from NXNE 2010 include Cold Cave, Warpaint, Avi Buffalo, and Zola Jesus.
NXNE Music programs music across a full range of genres: rock, hip-hop, punk, alt-country, DJ, folk, electronica, reggae, experimental and more. NXNE Film screens features, documentaries, shorts, animations, and experimental films – anything in which the music is front & centre. NXNE Interactive brings together digital creators, tech entrepreneurs, and new media aficionados, from bloggers and web designers to anyone interested in maximizing productivity and enjoyment of digital technology and social media.
NXNE gives artists what they need to connect with a huge audience and essential music-biz decision makers:
- 7 days and 50 venues with 270,000 fans and thousands more industry professionals – from Toronto’s hottest clubs and cinemas, to stages around the downtown core and at Pearson Airport, to four days and nights of jam-packed outdoor concerts at Yonge-Dundas Square.
- Local, national, and international media: tastemaking music blogs, UK magazines & radio stations, and Canadian television networks, print journalists and photographers. NXNE shows are broadcast internationally and each year’s top bands get worldwide attention.
- A direct pipeline from the festival straight to the airwaves: NXNE pumps the music of the best Canadian NXNE musicians straight out to over 250 influential radio programmers across the country via the NXNE TOP 60 TIP SHEET.
