New NIN Live DVD

3 years ago by Alan Cross |

I like Nine Inch Nails. A lot. I would never go so far as saying that I’m their biggest fan by any stretch of the imagination, I do buy every studio album as quick as humanly possibly and I have culled a vast array of…er…live material over a number of years. I have a copy of the Broken movie on dvd and at one point I even had it on VHS.

But my fandom is relatively small in comparison to the fine folks over at www.thisoneisonus.org.

The site began as a response to NIN’s announcement that a concert dvd of the Lights in the Sky tour had been canceled for various reasons.  As Trent had given the fans “The Slip” album for free or as he put it “This one’s one me” the fan community responded by collecting up all of the footage they could find in order from the last night of the tour for a fan dvd. The idea was to create a fan dvd and distribute it through bit torrent and various other file sharing networks.

Hence “This one is on us.”

So these plans were announced by these awesome fans and then Mr. Reznor decided he had another gift for his public.

400 gigs worth of HD footage from three shows including the Las Vegas stop. All the footage was unedited (as you could download a single camera angle of an entire show).

So the plan became revamped into a multi dvd and blu ray set entitled “Another Version Of The Truth”.

One year and a ton of work later, the first disc was released for download at Christmas made up of the HD footage supplied by Trent and company called “Another Version Of The Truth: The Gift”

Wow.

Created by using footage from Sacremento, Portland and Victoria (BC) shows and using one main 5.1 audio source, the dvd is nothing short of awesome. Especially for a fan made dvd. Now granted a lot of these fans are in the industry (from what I understand, a bunch of the people who worked on this are professionals but keep in mind, none of them are getting paid)

Now this is available in fancy 1080p blu ray… unfortunately I don’t have a blu ray player or a HD TV but I did download the dual layer version and I am amazed by everyone who worked on this project. The cuts are well done, it’s all color timed correctly, the sound is great, if you had no idea that it wasn’t a standard dvd that you’d buy at Best Buy, you wouldn’t know the difference.

In fact, I only picked up on one or two “mistakes” of music mistiming (the strumming of a guitar slightly off from the sound, etc) but to be honest, these are very minor and very small and I’m sure just kind of unavoidable when you take that much footage and put it to one single audio source. I’m sure that if you watch “And All That Could Have Been” which is an official NIN dvd release that was put together in a very similar manner, you would notice similar mistakes.

In short, “The Gift” will not only stand up to any Nine Inch Nails’ dvd currently in your video library but may even surpass it. If you saw The Lights in the Sky tour at any point, you will want to download this.

But wait! There’s more!

As I stated earlier, this is the first of a multiple disc release. On January 25th a disc of bonus material will be made available for download. This is apparently including a behind the scenes on the making of the dvd and a ton of alternate fan footage of different songs, from different shows, some interview footage and a ton more. Then on February 25th  we will get the dvd that started the whole thing off with a completely fan sourced dvd (video footage and sound) of the Las Vegas show which was the last of Lights in the Sky tour.

And if you want even more Nine Inch Nails video to tied you over until those releases, This One Is On Us also has links to fan made dvds of the Webster Hall concert where The Downward Spiral was performed in it’s entirety, or an flac and various other audio formats of Another Version of The Truth.

If you are a fan and haven’t done so already, go here for all of the details and links.
