The Acacia Strain crushes with Wormwood

2 years ago by Adam Morrison |

Massachusetts four-piece The Acacia Strain’s fifth full length is a seriously heavy record.

Vocalist Vincent Bennett’s lyrics are hateful, absolutely angry, and merciless—towards both the person he’s talking to and, when addressing his own dark outlooks, himself. The fact that they rhyme helps them stick, and I think it also has led his writing to have a more dramatic/poetic sort of flare, which fits his messages quite well.

If you’re in the right mood/frame of mind for Wormwood, don’t put it on while you do something else; sit and listen to it. You’ll have to take in the words and feel what the band has laid down here. It’s ugly and it’s personal.

Not just heavy … this is hard music.

Guitarist Dl’s playing—with an eight-string this time around—has a full, often grooving kind of sound, as does the rhythm section. The samples and little production touches give an extra edge to the force of the songs.

The tone is pretty consistent throughout the album, so it would be pointless to describe various riffs, real deathcore moments, etc. … just click here to check out the band’s MySpace page.

These guys definitely are not ‘pop’…I saw them play live about a year and a half ago and boy it was an angry angry gig. The music just strikes a chord in you and all of a sudden you are doing high kicks and windmill punches (I was dodging them as I don’t do that sort of thing).
