A Punk Rock Anniversary

8 months ago by Alan Cross |

Today–February 2–is the anniversary of there death of Sid Vicious, the most infamous of all the original British punk rockers of the 1970s.

On the night of February 1, 1979, he and his mom were at his girlfriend’s place.  Sid had just been sprung from jail and was awaiting trial on charges that he murdered his last girlfriend with a big knife to the abdomen the previous October.  They had a big spaghetti dinner–and then for dessert, Sid’s mom (thoughtful as she was) gave him a little taste of the heroin she had brought. He overdosed, but they managed to bring him around again.

Then everyone went to bed.  Sid, though, couldn’t stop thinking about that smack in mom’s purse, so at some point in the night, he got up, took it and went back to bed.  But because he had detoxed in jail, the amount he took–his usual amount in the old days–proved to be fatal.

He overdosed a second time and with everyone sleeping, there was no one to help.  He was found dead in his bed the next morning.  He was 22 years old.
