And You Thought Vinyl Was Old School

2 years ago by Alan Cross |

The way we store music has changed so many times over the decades.  Before MP3s, we have CDs and MiniDiscs and DAT tapes and cassettes and eight-track and several types of vinyl.

But in the very, very beginning, we had the wax cylinder.  It spun like an axle and its grooves were read by a needle.  They were fragile, wore out quickly and didn’t sound very good.  So why would anyone want to release an album on wax cylinder today?  Well, someone has.  A British group called The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing have recorded a song called “Now That’s What I Call Steampunk–Volume One” and will release it on a waxy cylinder.  This is the first time anyone has done such a thing in at least a century.

There will be forty copies available–and here’s the catch: they come with instructions for building a device that will actually allow you to play it.
