“Jesus Stole My Girlfriend” by Violent Soho

Love the name of this band. They’re called Volent Sho. They’re from outside of Bisbane, Astralia, and have been around since 2004. One album, a few EP Then about a year ago, they were courted by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and he signed them to his own Ecstatic Peace label.

The first release on this side of the Pacific is a limited edition EP featuring some re-recorded versions of their best songs. Part of that EP is a song called “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend”.

“Suicide Bomb The Gap” by The Kominas

Check out this next band. They’re called the Kominas. They’re based out of Boston and New York—and they’re Muslim punks. This is a genre called “Taqwacore”. They have an album called “Wild Nights in Guantanamo Bay” and you should hear a song called “Suicide Bomb The Gap”. Don’t jump to conclusions. Just listen.

“Wanderlust King” by Gogol Bordello

Then we have Gogol Bordello. Gypsy/Ukrainian punks. Lots of accordions and violins—and tons of energy. If you haven’t heard the song “Wanderlust King”, go listen to it now. It’s from an album called “Super Taranta!”.

“Ich Erinnere Mich An Die” by World/Inferno Friendship Society

Now try the World/Inferno Friendship Society. They are from Brooklyn and are a collective so big they make Broken Social Scene look like a jazz trio. There are at least 30 people involved with the band, including former members of Nine Inch Nails and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. The album is called “Addicted To Bad Ideas”—and the title of this song because is in German: “Ich Erinnere Mich An Die”. 

“My Way” by The Sex Pistols

And finally, some Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols. It was on February 2, 1979, that Sidney died of an overdose on some heroin that was thoughtfully provided by his mom. We’ll never know if he really did kill his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. You need to see him do his version of “My Way”.
