Five Songs You Gotta Hear for February 4 2010

Ghost Fever” by The Balconies

We’ll start with a band called The Balconies. Three people originally from Ottawa, although they’re based in Toronto now. They all met while studying classical music at university.

Jaquie, the singer and guitarist, and Liam, the drummer, are a couple. The bass player is Jacquie’s little brother. This is very sweet stuff. There was a debut self-titled record back at the end of September and they’ve been on the road plugging it ever since. A song called “Ghost Fever” seems to resolving itself into a fan favourite.

Falling From The Sun” by The Album Leaf

Here’s something wonderfully gentle. The Album Leaf is from San Diego. Very mellow, sometimes almost ambient. They were formed in 1998. There are now five albums, the most recent of which is called “A Chorus of Storytellers”. It came out on the Sub Pop label on Tuesday. A song called “Falling From The Sun” is very pretty. If you’re at all into Death Cab For Cutie, you must give them a listen.

Coochie” by Blakroc

Blakroc is an interesting construction. It’s a collaboration between members of The Black Keys and a variety of hip-hop guys: Mos Def, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, RZA and even Ol’ Dirty Bastard from Wu-Tang—and he’s been dead for five years.

In fact, that’s the song you should sample. It’s called “Coochie”. ODB and Ludacris. But you have to buy the CD. This track doesn’t appear on the iTunes version of the album.

Good Riddance” by Exodus

Next we have Exodus. This is the San Francisco thrash metal band that’s been around forever. New album called “Exhibit B: The Human Condition”. It’s number 12. And they offered a song called “Good Riddance” for a free download.

Servitude” by Fishbone

Last we have some Fishbone. They are a great band. They were into ska-funk before the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were formed in 1979. The Chili Peppers were basically inspired by them. Here’s a video to a song called “Servitude” that’ll show you what we mean. Great album title: “Give A Monkey A Brain and He’ll Swear He’s The Centre of The Universe”. 1993.

Actually the best name of a Fishbone album was “Village to the Lanfd of Freeze Dried Godzilla Farts”.

Always wondered what that place looked like.

As an aside, this little article of your is one of my wake ups everyday, so keep doing it.
