Canadian Music Week is the biggest music festival in the country. Dozens of venues, hundreds of bands, thousands of people, all over just a few days. Until it’s all over, the daily “Five Songs You Gotta Hear” list will feature bands scheduled to appear.
“Lion On A Leash” by Kae Sun
Kwadu Darko-Mensah Jr. is a dude from Hamilton, but he goes by the name of Kae Sun. He’s originally from Ghana and the city of Accra. And he’s hard to describe. He raps and then moves into all kinds of different areas like gentle, Marley-ish reggae and even stuff that sounds a bit like Seal. Check out a song called “Lion On A Leash,” which is a track from his current album.
If you like this kind of laid-back stuff, learn more about Kae Sun. Watch this guy.
“Into The Grey” by Darkest Hour
Darkest hour are from Washington, DC. They’re part of a Sunday bill that includes The Dillinger Escape Plan. They are all about metal. The current record is “The Eternal Return”. You want a song called “Into The Grey”. They’ve got more than 8 million myspace plays, so there’s something here.
“Zed Is For Zombie” by Voodoo Bunny
Alan loves the name of this band: Voodoo Bunny. Didn’t even have to look up where they’re from because they have a song called “Zed Is For Zombie”. Perfect Canadian giveaway. But they are from Toronto. Great logo, too.
“Burnin’ Up” by Rynecologist
Then there’s Rynecologist. They’re an electronic band from Toronto—and Alan just likes that they take the piss out of the Jonas Brothers.
“Disappear” by Star Eyes
And we’ll end with Star Eyes. More electronics but with the purpose of filling dancefloors. HQ is brooklyn. And see what you think of a track called “Disappear”.
