Five Songs You Gotta Hear Today for July 8 2010

Farewell, Mona Lisa” by The Dillinger Escape Plan

The 2010 Vans Warped Tour started in California on back on June 25th. After working south through California then east through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, it turned north through Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Tomorrow, it makes its first Canadian stop with a gig at Arrow Hall in Toronto.

One of bands playing is The Dillinger Escape Plan. They’re a math rock-y band from New Jersey who have been at it for more than a dozen years. They got things going with a record called Calculating Inifinity, which is a brilliant album from 1999.

Since then, there have been three more records with the most recent being something called Option Paralysis. It’s their first release on their own label. The reviews have been stellar. The CD leads off with a track called “Farewell, Mona Lisa”. If you don’t know The Dillinger Escape Plan, this is a great place to start.

Liquid Confidence” by You Me At Six

Who else is playing Warped in Toronto tomorrow? Well, there’s You Me At Six. They’re British—five guys from Surrey. They’re on to their second album, which is called Hold Me Down. It came out back in January. There have also been two EPs this year. Go with a single called “Liquid Confidence”.

Fed Up” by AM Taxi

We’ve heard AM Taxi on the show before. This is a five-piece from Chicago who just released a debut on Virgin Records—one month ago today, in fact. It’s called We Don’t Stand A Chance. They have a solid song called “Fed Up” that will be a highlight of their set. If you like what The Gaslight Anthem or The Hold Steady is doing these days, you’ll like that track.

Disconnected” by Face To Face

Face To Face are punk rock vets. They’re from California and have been together since 1991. It’s good to see them with some new material, too. Their last full album came out in 2002. They’re working through some stuff from what will be their seventh album on the tour. Until we have something on record, get acquainted with them through a song called “Disconnected” from 1994.

A Lifeless Ordinary” by Motion City Soundtrack

Finally, Motion City Soundtrack. They’re from Minneapolis and were formed at around 1997, although they’re down to just two original members. Back in January, they released their fourth album, which they call My Dinosaur Life. It’s their first major label record—and it was produced by Mark Hoppus from Blink-182. Go with a song called “A Lifeless Ordinary”.

So there are five bands you’ll hear tomorrow if you’re going to the Warped show in Toronto. If you’re going to the Montreal show on Saturday, we’ll deal with that tomorrow.
