“This Town” by Lisa Brigantino
There are millions of tribute bands out there, groups who make a living performing as reasonable facsimiles of the real thing. There is a thriving industry of Led Zeppelin tribute bands. Outside of a proper reunion (which would include John Bonham rising from the dead), they’re the next big thing.
Which brings me to Lez Zeppelin, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band. Finally, we can talk abut a former member named Lisa Brigantino.
Lisa is based out of New York. She’s loaded with formal education, including a master’s degree in music in composition and theory. She’s done work in film and TV, theatre, and dance. She works with her sister in a musical comedy act. Earlier this month, she released her second CD. It’s called Wonder Wheel. Some people are saying that this will be a big break-out record in the second half of the year. Start with a song called “This Town”.
“Bloodbath & Beyond” by Soulfly
The second song on today’s list is from Soulfly. They came together after Max Cavalera left Sepultura, the Brazilian metal band, way back in 1996. They’re now based in Phoenix and are up to album number seven, which is called Omen. It came out about a month ago, and it leads off with a song called “Bloodbath & Beyond”. Wasn’t that an episode of Itchy and Scratchy? Anyway, check it out.
“Shutterbug” by Big Boi
Big Boi is one-half of Outkast. He has his own album now called Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. If you like Outkast, then this deserves a look. The first single is a song called “Shutterbug”.
“y7” by Autechre
Autechre are the English electronia-slash-techno group from the Manchester area. They have been around forever: 1987. There are ten albums, the most current of which is called Oversteps—but that’s not what we want you to listen to. There’s a companion EP that goes with that record called Move of Ten. Like almost all their tracks, they’re unpronounceable because the titles often don’t make up actual words. So let’s pick something simple: a track called “y7”.
“Life’s What You Make It” by Talk Talk
One last track: “Life’s What You Make It” from Talk Talk. This was a band that peaked fast and early in the 80s with three brilliant records. They were followed by a couple of records that nobody got. Then they broke up with lead dude Tim Friese-Greene retiring from the music business. Here’s the original video.
