“Some Days” by Hello Beautiful
Hello Beautiful is a five-piece band from Whitby, Ontario, who are very much into the same headspace as Ben Folds, Jack’s Mannequin and maybe elements of Crash Kings. The piano figures big in a lot of tracks. The songs starts with sunny melodies—and then the rap comes in. Imagine if Elton John were playing and suddenly Snoop Dogg does a guest MC.
The way they do it is pretty skilful because it works pretty well. Then there are the songs that are guitar-driven and punky. It’s all very tight and well-performed. Of course, it did help that they went into the studio with guys who worked with bands like Billy Talent, Muse and Cancer Bats. The album is called I Wanna Die Like This—and the song you should hear is called “Some Days”—and it will go through your head for the rest of the day.
“Shifting Through The Lens” by Front Line Assembly
Front Line Assembly is the Vancouver post-industrial band that has been around since at least 1986. Founder Bill Leeb is still with the band. He created the project after he left Skinny Puppy. He’s been the only constant. By our count, we’re at album number sixteen. It’s called Improvised Electronic Device—I.E.D., for short (surprisingly no one had come up with that name already). It’s due on the 25th and the advance single is “Shifting Through The Lens”.
“Don’t Be Stupid (It’s A Big World)” by My Sister Ocean
My Sister Ocean is the Edmonton band who is releasing a song on the first Tuesday of every month for a year. By November, they’ll have enough for a proper album called The Month of Tuesday. All of them are posted sequentially on their MySpace page. May’s song is called “Don’t Be Stupid (It’s A Big World)”.
“Are You There” by Fear Zero
Fear Zero is from Vancouver. Four guys with a record called Whole Damn Nation. They cover a lot of ground: harder rock, some pop song—even reggae. They’re pretty ecumenical. You can sample just about everything they’ve ever done at their MySpace page, but they’d really like you hear a song called “Are You There”.
“Nazi Punks F*** Off” by Napalm Death
Finally, Napalm Death, the godfathers of grindcore. When they were formed in Birmingham, England in 1982, they thought metal was too wimpy so they turned up the sonic assault to “kill”. Here’s a video of them covering the Dead Kennedys classic, “Nazi Punks F*** Off”. Very fierce. Done in less than 2 minutes. Make sure all the pets are out of the room first.
