Gone the Knack

2 years ago by Jeff Woods |

"I had never met a girl like her – ever … she induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn’t quit. She was very self-assured. She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy."

Sounds like the kind of girl that would inspire a song.    Sure enough, Sharona did just that, a #1 hit for 6 weeks in 1979.

Doug Fieger met Sharona Alperin (who was 17 at the time) and she inspired a two-month-long run of songwriting. "It was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat; I fell in love with her instantly. And when that happened, it sparked something and I started writing a lot of songs feverishly in a short amount of time."

31 years later, the leader of the band The Knack, has died at the age of 57.

Another taken by the ‘C’ word.

Terrible c-word – That’s sad to hear. So what became of Sharona – did date or marry her?

What happened to her? What an amazing inspiration for him!

Thanks for that Jeff. I think it’s really cool that they reference her connection to My Sharona in her bio. To be the girl who inspired one heck of an earwig song … it’s been in my head for two days now!

Sharona was on the cover/sleeve for the single. I don’t have my copy of it any more (damn!), just the album (vinyl, of course). I recall that she looked, erm…inspiring to a musician.
