Mail from Afghanistan

That’s a pre-flight pic of my wife. (left side, middle row).  She just landed in Afghanistan.   I blogged about why she’s there, the other day (click here)

Turns out the rock show that was to have happened in the secret location (a place on the Persian Gulf nobody’s supposed to talk about) didn’t happen, out of respect for a local dignitary that had just passed away (loud noise or celebrations deemed inappropriate at such a time).

I just received this note, with the latest:

What a day!!!!  We are all so unbelievably burnt out.  The plane ride was actually pretty cool and combat landing wasn’t so bad. (the plane didn’t actually quite drop from the sky as we had presumed).  They had us do about a million things today upon our arrival.  This place is MASSIVE.  It’s Mad Max!  We saw some crazy  #^*&!  The troops are welcoming here and seem grateful for our presence.
There are around 40,000 people on this base mostly military and some civilian … it’s like a small town.  But a small town at war with an unseen enemy.  I can’t imagine anyone volunteering to actually be here.  The "insurgents" as they like to call them also fire rockets off that do land on the base.  Would have been nice to know that ahead of time.  This is probably the first time I’ve actually been overwhelmed and a bit scared on this trip to date.  I don’t feel safe here.  Anxious to move on to the next place…

  I think most Canadians want our troops to be safe and return home for the very same reason we want Lori and her crew to come back home safely.

  Bringing music to our troops is amazing! I am not sure I could commit to going over there! I had a lump in my throat reading her letter…

  I can’t imagine the experience of being in a place where you have to worry about rockets landing anywhere near you. She must REALLY love her job!! Good for her for going though. You must be very proud to call her your wife. I’d love to see more pictures!! Good luck to the both of you.

  Ouch. Reading this letter from Lori struck a chord….how many young kids do you believe sign up for such a mission, to escape the small town/dead end blues…without really knowing what they are getting themselves into? Come HOME Lori!
