I just read an excellent interview with the legendary Merle Haggard, and thought I’d pass it along to you, assuming you’re not going to exclain ‘I don’t like country music’ or something equally irrelevant, because a great story is a great story, and Haggard’s is just that.
Here’s the set up, from Vanity Fair:
You don’t have to like country music to think Merle Haggard is a badass. Sure, he wrote and recorded some of the most timeless classics in American music, from “Okie From Muskogee” to “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here And Drink." But just as relevant to his legend, he’s rubbed elbows with train hobos, gone through wives like tic tacs, and served time in more prisons than even the most committed career criminals, including a stay in the infamous San Quentin (where he first saw Johnny Cash perform in 1958). Over a decade later, he was given a full pardon for his legal indiscretions by then California Governor Ronald Reagan. And more recently, he was inducted by Governor Schwarzenegger into California’s 2010 Hall of Fame.
Now 73 years old, Haggard continues to live up to his outlaw reputation with more authenticity than musicians half his age.

The Allman Bros, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd were a step away from J. Geils Band and that was a note away from Marshall Tucker Band, Pure Prairie League and The Outlaws. Our group of friends loved the newer (1970′s) Country music.
There was a song called “I’ll Fix your Flat Tire, Merle” on PPL’s “Two Lane Highway” that we listened to but it was kind of a put down towards Merle Haggard. That was a great album, though, with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris guesting on a couple of tracks.
I think Merle’s right. Lindsay Lohan’s gotta straighten out, or else, she’s a goner. But, if she makes it, she’ll come back twice as successful as before. She needs some love and some hope. It sounds like she’s got a start on that, in her support system, right now. Let’s hope it’s enough to continue.

That was a great interview Jeff! Thanks for sharing it as I would not have seen it otherwise. Vanity Fair is not something I usually read. What Merle descrided sounded much like “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”. For sure, wouldn’t want to be near “Fred” either.
I think that Mr. Haggard is on target with his remarks about Linsday Lohan. If she has the chance to read this, I don’t think that she will be able to appreciate it. -
Too much. Long live rock’n'roll. Or country. You go Merle!

Thanks Jeff… Had the plesaure to see Merle in concert 2 weeks ago… Vocally and his guitar playing is betterthan 2years ago when I first saw him… I’ve talked to people who have known him for years and they say he’s more on his game now than 25 years ago….
