As 1996 turned into 1997, Oasis had a problem. After releasing two of the most successful British albums of the decade–Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory–it was time to come up with a third album. And on August 21, 1997, we got it: Be Here Now. The public went nuts, buying up half a million copies on its first day in the stores.
And at first, the reviews were excellent. But then things turned sour. It was over-produced. It was self-indulgent. The mix was horrible.
And eventually everyone–including Oasis–realized that it was a big, bloated record, made while the entire band was doing way too many drugs–including cocaine, which dulls the ear’s ability to hear high frequencies.
And even though the record sold 8 million copies, it’s been pretty much disowned by Oasis and many of their fans.
