Rolling Stones C*** Sucker Blues

From our friends at Rolling Stone:    When the Rolling Stones returned to the U.S. for a 1972 tour, they let photographer Robert Frank bring a crew of film cameras along for the ride with the intention of releasing an honest, behind-the-scenes look at a big band’s life on the road. The final cut was a bit more raw than the band had bargained for, though: When Mick Jagger and Co. watched Cocksucker Blues they decided they never wanted anyone else to see it. Frank won a 1977 court ruling that permits him to screen the film four times a year in an “archival situation” where he must be present.

    Perhaps as a tie-in to Alan’s recent “Ongoing History of New Music” episodes on Bootlegs, it should be noted that while this film has not been officially released, it has been around for years in bootleg form in various formats (VHS, DVD), and of course in various audio/video qualities – from decent to laughably bad, depending on the generation copy you happen to own.

    Yeah you can imagine what kind of stuff they didn’t want seen but who knows, by today’s standards it might be considered tame and just a bit embarassing. I’d pay to see it. Allow me to indulge my theme of today’s earlier blog post because again i believe it is pertinent to this theme/blog.(One gets to be indulgent on her Bday, non?)

    Hi Jeff

    I’d like to see the musical performances only. I’d rather have my own naive sense of what the road is like and the shenanigans that take place back stage or on the tour bus. I’ve seen enough people in my life doing drugs, getting drunk and looking whacked out. Hey, I was one of them.

    Interesting piece. I’d prefer to think that the depressing and lonely side of touring is what Mick was trying to hide, but the cynical side of me thinks otherwise. Perhaps it was a little too raw and a little too much info about their antics – a little mystery is a good thing!

    Hi Jeff,
    Good Pics have seen better, great pics of bjones…Love the comment that the band did not want him to show the real stuff i.e. dreary , exhaustion etc backstage…I guess the Stones were or are wanting a perfect picture?

    It is screening at Cineforum, 463 Bathurst Ave, every Tuesday at 7 until the end of November. It is the raw version with lousy sound, not the version screened at the Met, and the place only sits about 16 people, but if you want to see it, it’s in town for a while.

    went to this and really enjoyed it. the screen was big and bright, the sound was top of the line, the seating was comfortable and the room was temperature controlled. the copy he has is the best you can find as well.
