Sometimes less is more. Sometimes more is better. When I think about some of the most enduring and best loved albums in classic rock, I can’t help but think about some of the double albums. Beatles ‘White’. ‘Quadrophenia’ from the Who. Zeppelin’s ‘Physical Graffiti’. Live albums like Rush ‘All The World’s a Stage’, ‘Frampton Comes Alive’, Bob Seger’s ‘Live Bullet’.
And as much loved by Stones fans the world over, the 1972 double album, Exile On Main Street. I wore the vinyl out years ago playing it more than any other Stones record. It’s just so bloody dirty and bluesy and soulful and dark and deep.
Not only that, on May 18-2010 (a day earlier in the UK) it’s coming out again, in expanded format.
The new edition will feature 10 previously unavailable tracks, all recorded during the album sessions at London’s Olympic Studios and/or Keith’s basement at Nellcote in the South of France in the summer of ’71. Alternative versions of Soul Survivor and Loving Cup will also appear on this new release.
Exile on Main Street will be available in three formats: the original 18-track LP; a deluxe CD edition with the 10 bonus tracks and a super deluxe package that will also include a vinyl version, a 30-minute documentary DVD and a 50-page collector’s photo book.
Let’s open up the deluxe package:
The weekend before and the weekend after release (i.e May 16 & 23) I’ll be on the radio doing a 2 part Legends of Classic Rock series, featuring music from Exile and the stories behind it.
Now, you can sample the goods, as Exile is available to purchase as of Tuesday May 18th,
Enjoy,
Jeff.

Irony Time: It was this album that was the proverbial straw leading to my ‘exile’ from using the family stereo – got a paper route & bought my own system for my room from Consumers Distributing – also got headphones … Cheers!

Started hearing the new tunes on The Mighty Q and love it!!!!! I played my original Canadian release to death. Songs on this album always put a smile to my face. Sooooo good !!! I also bought the original UK release which had the cardboard inner sleeves instead of the paper ones we got. This is still in Mint condition hidden away with the postcards. Also have a bootleg with a number of alternate studio tracks likely from these sessions as the songs are from the album. I bought a book with all the Stones Lyrics in it because, before internet, no one really knew all the words Mick was really singing (except me). I heard that Mick Jagger did this on purpose to get fans to listen to the songs more closely.

I had the CD out of the library once, but I never did get through the whole thing. I should reserve it again. It’s the only Stones studio album I’ve had out of the library, and I really should listen to their other albums… I guess I was more of a Beatles fan as a young child, so I never really got into the Stones until a couple of years ago.
I have to start listening to Legends again. I haven’t in a long time. I blame it on laziness, and on life getting in the way a little.
