Springsteen and Strummer

1 year ago by Jeff Woods |
I never thought about it ’til now, but suddenly the common ground between Bruce Springsteen  and Joe Strummer seems inredibly obvious.
Both men come from the street, shoot from the hip and talk from the heart.
And while we no longer have the great Clash frontman on the planet, his praises continue to be sung inluding at the second night of  this year’s Glastonbury festival this past Saturday night as Bruce paid tribute to Joe Strummer.

Springsteen, a huge Clash and Strummer fan, chose to open the set with a solo rendition of Strummer‘s track ‘Coma Girl’. while that’s not yet available for viewing, there’s the original.

And if you have not yet seen it – I recommend you also check out ‘The Future is Unwritten’ -the incredible movie about the life and times of Joe Strummer.
Cheers,
Jeff.

the two guys have vision power and fight in their songs. strummer was a guru to most bands coming through the u.k. from the late 70,s onwards.

Though their musical styles differed in many areas, both Springsteen and Strummer were social commentators and were both subject ot the scorn of unappreciative fans. The public bandied around the term sell-out because The Clash went mainstream and Springsteen dropped The E-Street Band. Yet, both incredibly talented artists were able to overcome these social pressures to create some of rock’s greatest moments.

Yes, I had not made the connection either. I think I would like to hear Bruce’s version of London calling.

    two lions
    two eagles soar
    two lost men
    that found their soul
    through music
    they have become whole
    and changed the world

    two hearts
    two cries
    two musicains
    that paint the town
    through expression
    they have become legendary
    and changed the world

    two fighters
    two wars
    two fists
    that started a revelution
    through song
    they have become free
    and changed the world

    one sound
    one band
    one crowd
    that scream their names
    through the heavens
    they have become the song
and together they have changed the world

    and we changed with them
