I’ve always loved the Black Crowes. From the opening bars of ‘Twice as Hard’ – the first song from the first album, 1990′s ‘Shake Your Money Maker’, through the second triumphant album ‘Southern Harmony …’, and so on, they’ve shown us how to embrace and celebrate music’s rich roots past, while bringing into the present.
I met Chris and Rich a number of times since then, including on a junket in NYC, at which they proved to be southern gentlemen, and attended numerous live Crowes concerts, which have only gotten better and better.
As you may have heard, they’re back, but not for long.
Back in April they announced the band would take an indefinite but “lengthy” hiatus following its “Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys” tour. Chris Robinson says he can’t say how long this hiatus would last, no doubt because he’s really not sure.
“Two years, five years, 10 years – you never know when you jump into the void,” singer Chris Robinson told Rolling Stone. “It would be nice to have a 30th anniversary. But we should walk away from this while everyone’s in a good mood.”
In addition to a four-month tour and double-album, The Black Crowes are launching a web series called “20 Years of Tall Tales” as another parting gift before blowing this pop stand, so to speak. For the whole ‘Black Crowes Talk Tall Tales’ story, from Pollstar.com, click HERE.
Now, enjoy this, recorded live in L.A. at the Wiltern Theatre back in 2008.
Cheers,
Jeff

LOVE the Crowes. Probably my favourite band still performing today. Their upcoming Massey Hall gig will be bittersweet if it indeed proves to be their last one in Toronto before their indefinite hiatus. Luckily, I will be enjoying the show from my 2nd row center seat! Apparently each gig will be a 3 hour affair: 90 minutes acoustic, and 90 minutes electric. I have no doubt that it’ll be a barnburner.

I love the Crowes too and I discovered them by accident. I had 7th row tickets to Robert Plant in Edmonton way back in 1990. The Crowes opened up the show and proceeded to get booed off the stage. Quite the first impression I must say! I don’t think too many people have seen them booed off the stage. Right?

Picked up ‘Croweology’. Stellar. ’nuff said.
