The Butthole Surfers’ Garbage Van

2 months ago by Alan Cross |

The Butthole Surfers was a really weird band from the Lollapalooza era made up of some really weird guys from Texas.  One story goes something like this:

Sometime around 1986, the group’s van broke down for the very last time.  They had it towed back to Austin, Texas where frontman Gibby Haynes (or somebody) came up with the bright idea of sawing off the roof and using the thing for a garbage dumpster.  Six months later, the van was full of all sorts of horrible stuff and something had to be done.  That’s when the decision was made to tow the fan to Athens, Georgia, where they trolled the streets for the homes of the members of REM.  When they found Michael Stipe’s house, they parked the van (garbage and all) on the front lawn and set the whole thing on fire.

They don’t make bands like this anymore, do they?
