I’m going to recommend a book about an artist. The catch is that the artist doesn’t have anything to do with the sort of music we listen to around here, but that’s not the point. It’s all the other stuff in the book that’s fascinating.
Back in the 60s and the early 70s, Tommy James had a band called the Shondells. They had a series of million-selling hits, including the original of “Mony Mony,” the song that brought Billy Idol back from the dead. Tommy recorded for a label called Roulette which was run by a connected mob guy named Morris Levy. In fact, Morris was the inspiration for the character Hesh in The Sorpranos and one of his associates was a New Jersey dude named Fat Tony and he was the inspiration for Tony Soprano.
Reading this book you get an idea of how connected and corrupt and dangerous the music industry was back then. It’s brilliant. It’s called Me, the Mob and Music by Tommy James. Definitely a great read.
