For years, Scott Weiland had a rep as being one of the most messed-up people in rock: the drug abuse, the arrests, the time in jail, the marital issues, the death of the Stone Temple Pilots, a return with Velvet Revolver and then unilaterally sabotaging that.
But now things have settled down substantially. He’s off drugs–everything except the medication he takes for his bipolar disorder. He’s staying out of trouble and trying to mend the situation with his family. And he’s managed to hold it together with a reunited STP through almost three years and one album. What turned it around?
A lot of things, including jail and rehab–but I’d bet that the biggest wake-up call was the death of his younger brother, Michael, in 2007. He died of cardiomyopathy, which is the hardening and swelling of heart as the result of drug abuse. Michael and Scott used to get high a lot–and the drugs ended up killing him. Weiland has been off drugs ever since.
