For years, anyone anywhere in the world was able to go to any one of a series of websites and stream Ongoing History of New Music and Legends of Classic Rock whenever the spirit moved them. Hundreds of thousands of hours of material was streamed and word of what these programs were all about spread everywhere.
Then it stopped.
I won’t bore you with the intimate details because they involve a labyrinth of copyright laws that prevented us from legally and economically providing these streams. Basically, though, we had to carry out a series of protracted negotiations with the rights holders of all the music we play in order that they may be paid for us having the privilege to use this music as part of our business plan.
In Canada and many other countries, radio stations have to pay a series of fees to artist collectives in exchange for being able to play music. That’s only fair. The fees are tied to revenue. The more money a radio station makes, the more in fees it has to pay. Again, that’s fair. The way these fees are established, collected and paid out has been in place since the 1930s.
But with the Internet, the law is different and more high-tech. We’re obligated to pay on a per-song, per-stream, per-listener basis and not necessarily tied to revenue. The data generated by that kind of granularity is, er, daunting. And even when we conquered the technical aspects of being able to acquire and extract this data, there was still the matter of how much we should pay. And to whom.
Trying to negotiate all that was painful, slow and complex. But now it’s done.
You can now stream selected ExploreMusic, Ongoing History and Legends of Classic Rock shows from the ExploreMusic home page. Please indulge yourself and PLEASE let us know if you find any bugs or have any issues. And let us know how you’d like this to work. All comments are most welcome.

This is fantastic news! I love the History of New Music and I’m thrilled that I’ll be able to access it again. I’ve been missing it, and have a hard time catching it on the radio.
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication! -
I am so happy about this…are you planning on adding the backlog of Ongoing History?
-
Hooray!!! At long last!
-
For starters on the back-catalog, how about the 15 or 16 episodes of the history of alt rock?
-
I’ve been waiting a longgggg time for this!
-
Are there any plans to bring back downloadable/subscribe-able, music-less eps of Ongoing History?
-
We need an archive to go through! I’ve missed so many shows and it has made my life miserable and needing for something that I just couldn’t quite explain to people! I need to catch up and make my life whole again! Looking forward to an archive, Alan.

*le sigh*
The geotargetting seems a little sketch, at least for me at work. Can’t access it, and I’m right in the middle of downtown T.O.
Hmph, it’s probably on my end. Oh wells, hopefully I can listen at home.
-
Absolutely fantastic!
-
At Last!! I was so disappointed that it vanished off the web. Well done Alan

Any chance of getting the streams to work internationally?
I love all the shows, but sadly I can’t listen to them here in Hong Kong. -
Your Ongoing History Of New Music segments have been my favorite for years and to be honest it lends more credibility to the station to have somebody that is willing to offer more and is genuinely engrossed – not just interested but engrossed in music and the industry. I’m glad this is online, granted the content is being blocked in Australia, which is slightly annoying but easily fixed with a proxy server. Thanks for the hard work – it is paying off.
-
#£¥% ! It’s telling me I cannot listen to TOHNM outside of Canada, but I Live in Lewiston, Ny and can see Canada from my house what gives?
-
I would listen to the program from across the pond in Erie, PA whenever I was able. I would also catch up on any missed shows on the old website. That has since changed as stated before. You couldn’t believe my excitement when I saw the “Click here to listen On Demand” button. Oops, doesn’t work in the States. What can we do?
-
For Michael hanrahan … I hope I’m not doing anything against Explore Music by suggesting this solution but try this, it’s how I access TOHNM from Australia go to http://www.masksurfs.com and type http://www.exploremusic.com into the search window and you will now be operating on a proxy server that will allow you to stream. Look up proxy servers to find out more about them, just know they usually are slow. Hopefully one day international copyright agreements lift, they really are archaic and clinging to a dead idea.

Oh. My. God. Alan, you just made my day/week/etc.
I listened to every single stream on the early website. I can’t wait to give these streams a listen!!
-
Thanks so much for this! I look forward to hearing new OHNMs as they are put up.
-
Hey Alan, Will the backlog be finding their way to iTunes or will the stream only take place from exploremusic.com?
I’d love to be able to take them on the go with me somehow…thought that might be too much to ask right now.
Thanks again for getting these back online…it’s been a long time coming!

I normally only catch bits of the program while I’m in the car. Not only do I find it fantastic that I can now listen to them, but the fact that you’re here, engaged, and helping people discover/rediscover music.
Alan, you have achieved the rank of “Awesome”.
-
I think the itunes idea is a good idea for the backlog of shows. I would pay 99 cents an episode or 9.99 for “season pass” of shows (Music or no music) Keep up the good work.
P.S. How about a show on Jason Pierce and that underrated shoegazer stuff from the late 80′s/early 90′s?
-
I was listening to the History of new music show which was speaking about the history of the “Mash-Up”. I enjoyed the show very much, however when speaking of DJ Danger Mouse and “The Grey Album” I believe that you said it was a combo of the Beatles “White album” and Price’s “Black Album”. It is actually a combo of The Beatles “White Album” and Jay-Z’s “Black Album”, which at the time of release was supposed to be his final album.
When it first came out that was in my car’s CD player for a few months as I loved the whole concept, and the music was great too boot !Thanks for your great show.
Sincerely, Andrew,

Opps that was Prince’s, not Price’s, Black album that you spoke of.
-
That is a nice post. Thanks into branch. Smilee

Any way us expats in the States can listen?
-
Any progress on getting the the back episodes online? And is there a reason why only the last 8 episodes are available online?
