WTF?

The Best And Worst Things Ever! (of the week) – 11/06/09

3 years ago by Adam Morrison |

Some time ago (I’m not looking it up, just take my word for it), I read a quote from a member or members of Weezer saying that they’re going to release a Weezer version of the Snuggie. They referred to it as a Wuggie. I think someone from the band wore one onstage (I’m still not looking this up, but it happened).

At the time, I thought Weezer must be joking. Now, comes the hell this:

Haha, like the Snuggie commercial, but…this isn’t funny! It’s not serious, but that doesn’t make it funny! Well, if it scored two points on the funny scale, then the effort seemingly put into it is probably a three and a half.

The band seems to have blurred the lines between something unusual/consciously uncool/cheesy and something actually funny. I’m not super-sensitive when it comes to variations of the Snuggie, but I think we need to hold the band to a higher standard than this. Boycott these things and you’ll be glad you did.

This next clip finds Weezer performing a medley of MGMT’s "Kids" (cool) and Lady Gaga’s "Pokerface" (damnit). Usually when rock bands cover or tease a superpop song, they do it as a half-joke, but I don’t think that’s the case here. Not to belabour the point, but I’ve concluded that Weezer now exist in a weird state where some things they do can only be described as Weezerly. The medley works really well, I’ll give ‘em that.

Finally, you might have seen this already, but here’s Christopher Walken doing a spoken word performance of the same Lady Gaga song for BBC. It’s funny, and it shows her poetry in a different light.

Btw, an alternate segue between Weezer’s Snuggie and Lady Gaga was that Gaga’s including some of her hair in the deluxe edition of her new album.

With all due respect, I think maybe your prejudices hinder you from appreciating both of these things for what they are. Maybe you didn’t find the Weezer Snuggie “funny” or “cool” but I’m sure lots of other people did.

As for the Kids/Poker Face medley, I thought it was awesome, and so did absolutely everyone I showed it to who is a Weezer fan. The fact that you had to grudgingly admit that it “works well” with what can only be described as a sense of shame and embarrassment says more about your own closed-mindedness than about the band itself.
It doesn’t take a Lady Gaga superfan to like something that’s catchy and well-executed like the medley done by Weezer. Anyone who thinks differently needs to evaluate where their music snob attitude comes from and take the elitism down a notch.
