The NIN First Dance Mystery Solved (We Think)

3 years ago by Alan Cross |

On Saturday, Goths everywhere were extra sad upon the announcement that Trent Reznor had taken a bride.  Mariqueen Maandig, the former singer of a band called West Indian Girl, became Mrs. Reznor.

And before you ask, yes, she wore white and the groom was in a tuxedo.  He looked good but a bit strange at the same time.  It was sort of like watching a monkey ride a bicycle:  he can do it, but it doesn’t look quite natural.  Check out some pictures (including some tasteful nude shots of the bride) here

Nosy people are dismayed that details from the wedding have been slow to come out.  We do know that Trent and Mariqueen used the same photographer as Tom and Katie and Brad and Jennifer.  And after much research by ExploreMusic fans, we seem to know the answer to this burning question:  What was the song chosen for the couple’s first dance?

Unconfirmed but credible reports say it was “We Own the Sky” from the poppy shoegazer-ish French band, M83.  Here’s the video:

Pleasant song, but a portion of the lyrics read like this:

Soft, soft or cruel
Can’t we change our minds?
We kill what we build
Because we own the sky

Predictably, views of the video on YouTube have spiked and M83 is probably wondering why they’re suddenly selling lots of downloads through iTunes.

So we have our answer.  But before all this came down, I posed the question on Twitter (@alancross) and my Facebook page.  What song do you think Trent and Mariqueen picked for their first dance?  The response was, er, enthusiastic.  If I leave out the predictable shouts for “Closer,” here are some recommendations:

Corey:  “Down In It”

Gregg:  “In Spite of Ourselves” from John Prine and Iris Dement

Joe:  “Somebody” by Depeche Mode

Kate:  The Manson version of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.”

Aaron:  “Still the One” by Shania Twain

Heather:  Olivia Newton-John and “I Honestly Love You”

Naveed:  “Head Like a Hole” (“…because that’s pretty much what they’ll both be thinking when it’s time for the divorce.”)

Corey:  The Divinyls and “I Touch Myself”

Jo-Ann:  Anything from Air Supply.

Dave:  “Finally” by CeCe Peneston

Jospeph:  “’Closer’ for now.  ‘Hurt’ in a year or two.”
